Wikileaks Assange granted political asylum by Ecuador
The former hacker Julian Assange is granted political asylum by Ecuador a day after Britain’s foreign minister William Hague threatened to raid the Ecuadorian embassy to catch the Wikileak head. A fan of Assange’s anti-imperialistic ways the Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa granted asylum in fear for the safety of the Australian.
Britain is considering stripping Ecuador of its diplomatic status in order to get around the issue - a controversial decision which Ecuador compared to the actions of Iran storming the British Tehran embassy in 2011. Assange, who is currently accused of rape and sexual assault in Sweden, fears that if extradited from Britain to Sweden he will more promptly be extradited to the USA post trial. This extradition would be for charges of treason over the unveiling of over 250,000 private state cables - a felony that could carry the death penalty.
In an attempt to Broker relations Ecuador asked for Britain and Sweden to guarantee that Assange would not be extradited to a third country. Both countries refused to guarantee. However under European law neither country is allowed to extradite anyone to a country where they may face the death penalty. There are ways around this though
